The Fastest Way to Translate Text on macOS

Stop copy-pasting to Google Translate. Learn how to translate text instantly in any application with a simple keyboard shortcut.

We live in a global world. Whether you're communicating with international colleagues, learning a new language, or just trying to understand a comment on social media, you likely need to translate text daily.

The old way is slow:

  1. Select text.
  2. Cmd+C to copy.
  3. Open browser.
  4. Go to Google Translate or DeepL.
  5. Cmd+V to paste.
  6. Read result.
  7. Copy result.
  8. Switch back to app.
  9. Paste.

That's 9 steps just to say "Hello" in Spanish.

The Rephrase Way: 1 Step

With Rephrase, translation is instant and happens right where you are.

  1. Select text and hit your hotkey (e.g., Cmd+Shift+S for Spanish).

That's it.

The selected text is instantly replaced with the translation. Or, if you just want to read it, you can use a prompt that shows the result without replacing the original.

Use Cases

  • Customer Support: Reply to tickets in the customer's native language instantly.
  • Learning: Quickly translate words you don't know in articles or books.
  • Global Teams: Chat seamlessly in Slack with colleagues who speak different languages.

Configuring Your Translation Hotkeys

Rephrase allows you to create custom hotkeys for specific languages.

  1. Open Rephrase Settings.
  2. Click "Create Hotkey".
  3. Name it "To Spanish".
  4. Set the context: "Translate this text to Spanish. Keep the tone friendly."
  5. Assign a shortcut (e.g., Cmd+Shift+S).

Now, whenever you need Spanish, it's just a keystroke away.
