Stop Apologizing: How to Communicate with Confidence
Do you say 'just' and 'sorry' too much? Learn how to remove weak language from your writing and sound more authoritative.
"I just wanted to check..."
"Sorry to bother you..."
"I think maybe we should..."
Sound familiar? These are "hedging" words. We use them to be polite, but they undermine our authority. They make us sound unsure, timid, and junior.
The Confidence Filter
Rephrase acts as a confidence filter for your communication.
Weak Draft: "I was just thinking that maybe if we have time we could try the new design?"
Rephrase Prompt: "Rewrite to be confident and direct."
Strong Result: "I recommend we test the new design. It aligns better with our goals."
Words to Watch Out For
- Just: "I just thought..." -> "I thought..."
- Actually: "I actually disagree..." -> "I disagree..."
- Sorry: "Sorry, but..." -> "However..." (unless you actually made a mistake!)
- Does that make sense?: -> "Let me know if you have questions."
Fake It 'Til You Make It
Using confident language actually makes you feel more confident. And it makes others trust you more.
